Loki and Thor: A Journey of Love, Medicine, and Gratitude at UC Davis

Our journey with UC Davis began out of desperation and turned into one of the most meaningful relationships of our lives. In March 2023, we traveled from our home in Mexico seeking answers for Thor’s persistent cough. What unfolded was far more complex—Thor was diagnosed with melanoma. But it was also when we first met an extraordinary resident who calmly walked us through the diagnosis and treatment options, outlining risks and hope on a whiteboard with a clarity and care that instantly grounded us.

Thor underwent surgery and began the melanoma vaccine series, and thanks to the precision and empathy of his care team, he thrived. We quickly realized UC Davis was more than a hospital—it was a lifeline. Without a primary care provider nearby, we entrusted both of our beloved English Labs, Thor (chocolate) and Loki (black), to the capable hands of the team at the hospital and oncology follow-up for Thor, and our bond with the UC Davis community deepened.

Then, in a turn of events that shook us, both Loki and Thor were diagnosed in October 2023 with nasal planum squamous cell carcinoma—an extraordinarily rare and heartbreaking coincidence for non-littermate dogs. The ER team guided us through the initial crisis. Oncology specialists gave us time, answers, and compassion as we chose a radiation path forward.

Loki responded beautifully, and we cherished his recovery. Thor’s journey was harder, but each step was supported with care and intention. A second round of radiation in May 2024 helped preserve his quality of life for as long as possible. But in a turn of events in October 2024, Loki returned for emergency treatment, ultimately undergoing successful surgery for cervical myelopathy.

We are deeply grateful to the rehab team who helped Loki regain his strength from surgery, and to neurosurgery’s specialist, whose diligence, follow-through, and personal visits meant everything to us during his recovery.

Though Loki passed away in December 2024 just shy of his 14th birthday, and Thor followed in January 2025 after celebrating his 14th birthday, we were gifted something immeasurable—timedignity, and hope. We were never alone. Every resident, faculty member, and technician became part of our family. Their expertise gave us extra months, precious memories, and the reassurance that we had done everything possible for our boys.

We will never forget the front desk staff and veterinary technicians who greeted us and the boys by name, always with warmth, treats, and a smile—even now, they offer us hugs when we visit campus, and we feel the presence of Loki and Thor in their kindness.

To honor Loki and Thor, we established a scholarship fund in their names. Supporting UC Davis is our way of ensuring that future families—future beloved animals—can receive the same extraordinary care and compassion we did. Because at UC Davis, we didn’t just find medical answers. We found healing, friendship, and legacy.
