Dr. Jane Sykes Completes Infectious Disease Textbook

Jane Sykes, BVSc (Hons), PhD, MBA, DACVIM, professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, has edited and co-authored the Fifth Edition of Greene’s Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat. Long considered to be a seminal reference text in dog and cat infectious diseases, previous editions of the book are on bookshelves in specialty practices worldwide, and it is a resource for student and house officer training in nearly every veterinary school.

The book was conceived decades ago by Craig Greene, professor emeritus at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. After the Fourth Edition was released, Dr. Greene retired and Dr. Sykes accepted the role of editor. Before taking on this role, Dr. Sykes edited and co-wrote Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases (2015), because she felt there was a gap in the market for a clinically focused book for veterinary students and house officers.

The Fifth Edition of Greene’s Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat brings together the clinical emphasis of Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases with more detailed information on pathophysiology and less common diseases that have earned Greene’s Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat its reputation as “the bible.” As in Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases, almost every disease chapter includes case examples and simple, accurate, life cycle diagrams. Many of the photos have been updated to include high-resolution images. For the first time, the book includes a parasitology section, with chapters on fleas, ticks, flies, nematodes, trematodes, and a variety of other parasites.

“With this edition, the structured layout makes it easier for students to use it as a reference guide,” said Dr. Sykes. “For example, information on treatments and diagnostic tests are simplified, tables on drug doses are consistent, and case examples are so helpful.”

As many infectious diseases are zoonotic (transferable from animals to humans and vice versa), Dr. Sykes also wanted the book to be a reference beyond veterinary medicine.

“We’ve also built out the public health sections and made it useful for public health practitioners,” Dr. Sykes added. “I hope the book will also be a useful reference for physicians and infectious disease clinicians in human medicine. It emphasizes the importance of a One Health approach.”

Because almost all chapters received final updates in 2022, the book includes current information on diseases like COVID in pets, and on diseases for which many new diagnostic tests and treatments are available.
