MPVM graduate nominated as USDA undersecretary of food safety

MPVM priority application deadline is January 15

The US Department of Agriculture has nominated UC Davis Master in Preventive Veterinary Medicine (MPVM) graduate Dr. Jose Emilio Esteban for the position of undersecretary for food safety.

Esteban, a veterinarian who trained at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, has two degrees from UC Davis, an MPVM and a Ph.D. in epidemiology. A 1989 graduate of the MPVM program, his project was “The use of ribotyping for the characterization of Salmonella serotypes.”

Dr. Janet Foley, the faculty director of the MPVM program, said, “We are so proud to see Dr. Esteban nominated for this critical position safekeeping the nation’s food supply. The MPVM program prepares all its students for leadership in disease prevention and management, whether in the field or the halls of government.”

Esteban currently holds the position of chief scientist at the  USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), where he has worked in multiple positions since 2001.

MPVM Priority Deadline

The priority deadline for application to the MPVM program is January 15. While applications will be considered after that deadline, prospective students must apply by January 15 for financial aid consideration.

For 50 years, our graduates have found work in academia, government, non-profits, industry, and anywhere an understanding of disease transmission and prevention is valuable. A Master in Preventive Veterinary Medicine degree will give you a One Health understanding and can lead to ACVPM board eligibility. It is equivalent to a Master's in Public Health (MPH).

Any qualified medical health professional is invited to join the MPVM program. The program is open to veterinarians and other professionals in One Health. It includes comprehensive training in epidemiology and statistics. Core courses and electives include Leadership, Information Management, Infectious Disease, Modeling, Spatial Epidemiology, and more.
