UC Davis Launches House Officer Professional Educational Series
The House Officer Affairs Board (HOAB) at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine has launched the House Officer Professional Educational Series, with a goal to support house officer professional development, wellness, and academic success.
The monthly lecture series launched in September with “Tips for Time Management,” presented by residency leadership with UC Davis Health Graduate Medical Education. Time constraints on residents in human medicine can be overwhelming at times, and the subject matter translated well for the veterinarians, whose residency training is nearly identical to that of a physician.
Other topics in the series include “Suicide Prevention,” “Interviews and Salary Negotiations,” “Managing Burnout and Compassion Fatigue,” “Conflict Resolution,” and many others. A complete set of monthly lectures is slated for the remainder of the 2023-24 academic year.
“Our goal through the House Officer Wellness (HOW) Program and other professional development initiatives, like this lecture series, is to bring wellness and career education up to par with the veterinary medical education our house officers receive during their training programs,” said Dr. Jamie Burkitt, co-director of HOAB, along with Dr. Amandine Lejeune.
Some of the sessions are sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health’s sponsorship of the HOW Program indirectly supports the success of the House Officer Professional Educational Series.
