Pet Community and UC Davis Veterinary Students Benefit from Spay Day
To celebrate Spay & Neuter Awareness Month, the Sacramento SPCA recently presented Spay Day 2022. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine teamed up with the host organization to provide low-cost spay surgeries to local dogs in need. Annually, the surgeries prevent thousands of animals from entering our community’s shelters.
While the event was held nationally on Sunday, February 27, UC Davis’ Spay Day clinics took place on February 28 and March 2 to accommodate student schedules. The veterinary school’s Gourley Clinical Teaching Center helped facilitate spay surgeries for 25 female dogs and provided vaccinations and microchips as needed. Under faculty supervision, veterinary students helped perform the surgeries and gained valuable hands-on experience. Events such as Spay Day help prepare veterinary students for careers as general practitioners in local clinics.
Participation in Spay Day was given to pet owners residing in Sacramento or Yolo Counties who come from the underserved population or qualify for a financial assistance program (SMUD/PG&E Assistance Program, unemployment, active military or veteran, senior, SSI, college student, etc.).
UC Davis continues to seek wider access to care for local pet owners, and programs such as Spay Day fit well into its mission of addressing societal needs.
