Hank, a 10-year-old male Australian cattle dog, lives with his family in a rural area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. After roaming the property recently, he returned home bleeding profusely from the mouth, and it appeared his tongue was missing. Hank was taken to a local animal hospital where veterinarians were able to stop the bleeding and manage his shocked condition. Due to the severe nature of his wound, he was transferred to the UC Davis veterinary hospital.
Harvey, a brindle-colored male boxer, came to us through the Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue. In short, they save lost, neglected and abandoned dogs and find them loving homes. And sometimes, you can add “abused” to that list of adjectives. Harvey was one of those dogs.
Flynn, a yellow Labrador, and his family member Mason, a 16-year-old autistic boy, have formed a bond for the ages. When Flynn recently became ill, Mason vowed to do anything to help him. A community stepped in to make sure Flynn go the best care possible.
Cocoa, a 5-year-old male Shih Tzu, was diagnosed with high grade lymphoma in January 2017. He received a multi-drug chemotherapy treatment protocol until earlier this month.
Jackson, a 12-year-old male border collie, developed a crusting lesion under his eye and started losing hair in the area. The scaling condition spread down his muzzle so his owners took him to their veterinarian. A skin scraping showed a possible mite infestation, and both a pet anti-parasite medication and antibiotics were administered to Jackson. After that treatment did not clear up his condition, Jackson’s owners took him to another veterinarian; however despite that veterinarian’s best efforts, Jackson was still suffering from his skin condition.
Kayla, a 5-year-old female Rottweiler, was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor in November 2016. The tumor and associated lymph node were surgically removed at UC Davis in January 2017.
River, an 8-year-old female Labrador retriever, was diagnosed with high grade lymphoma in December 2016. A multi-drug chemotherapy protocol was recommended for River.
Oakley, a 5-year-old female boxer, was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor in January 2017. Mast cell tumors are the most common tumor of the skin in dogs.
Jasper Grimm, a male Newfoundland, routinely showed lameness in his pelvic limbs after exercise throughout his young life. At 6 months of age, he went to his veterinarian for bilateral stifle (knee) joint effusion and the start of femoral deformities making it difficult for Jasper Grimm to get up and walk normally. Shortly thereafter, in August 2016, his owner decided to have him evaluated by orthopedic surgeons at the UC Davis veterinary hospital.
Bella, a 5-year-old female pit bull terrier, was acting lethargic a few months ago and then produced dark urine and was icteric (jaundice-like). Her owner Carol, a veterinarian and UC Davis alum, knew something was wrong and ran blood tests on Bella. The tests indicated extremely low red blood cell (RBC) counts, and Carol suspected a case of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). IMHA can be a fatal disease, as it causes a dog’s immune system to destroy its own RBCs (which carry oxygen to the cells and pick up carbon dioxide).
